The Blueprint of a Modern Machine
Erling Haaland reportedly eats around six thousand calories a day. Not protein shakes, but cow heart, liver, tomahawk steaks, raw honey, and enormous quantities of milk. Cristiano Ronaldo does not sleep eight hours a night; instead, he sleeps five separate times in ninety-minute blocks on a protocol designed by a sleep professional. And Lionel Messi spent the first decade of his career being physically sick on the pitch until an Italian nutritionist changed what he ate.
Now, before you jump to the obvious, this is not a video telling you these men won the genetic lottery. That is the boring answer, and it is mostly wrong. Somewhere in the last twenty years, elite football stopped treating players as talented young men who train hard, and started treating them as capital assets to be optimised.
Four of them are the clearest examples on the planet, and each solved a different problem: Messi solved fuel, Ronaldo solved recovery, Mbappe solved acceleration, and Haaland is attempting something none of the others tried.
The Stakes
A footballer at this level is not a person with a job, but financially, he is an asset with a depreciation schedule, where a club is buying a stream of future performances from a body that has a limited number left.
Which means anything that extends a career by even two years is worth an amount that sounds insane out loud. So the money went into the margins—sleep specialists, nutritionists, movement analysts, and people whose entire job is one percent.

The Mechanism
In nineteen sixty-four, an economist at the University of Chicago named Gary Becker published a book called Human Capital, and it won him a Nobel Prize. His argument was controversial then and obvious now: a person's skills and health are capital, exactly like a factory. You invest in them, they generate returns, and they depreciate. It sounded cold, but Becker's point was the opposite—treat a human as an asset worth maintaining, and you invest properly.
Football has taken that further than almost any industry on earth because the window is short. A career runs roughly from eighteen to thirty-five, and the peak is far narrower, meaning you cannot expand it by working harder inside it since everyone at this level already trains at the limit.
So the only remaining variable is everything around the training: what goes in, what repairs, and how fast.
The Rise
Start with Messi, because he is the one with a documented before and after. For years he would vomit during matches, happening often enough to become a talking point without ever being satisfactorily explained.
In twenty fourteen he began working with an Italian nutritionist named Giuliano Poser. The approach was not exotic—water, good olive oil, whole grains, fresh fruit and vegetables, and removing the real problems, chiefly sugar and heavily processed food. The intervention was subtraction.
Which is the pattern for this whole subject: the famous version of the story is usually the version from before somebody fixed it.
The Crack
Ronaldo attacked the other end of the equation with the sleep coach Nick Littlehales. Littlehales built what he calls the R ninety protocol, based on the fact that sleep does not come in hours, but in cycles of roughly ninety minutes, and what matters is how many complete cycles you get, not what the clock says.
So instead of eight hours in one block, Ronaldo aims for five ninety-minute cycles across twenty-four hours, split between night sleep and scheduled naps. Whether that structure is optimal for the general population is genuinely debated among sleep researchers, and I want to be straight with you about that, but what is not debated is the underlying claim: sleep is when tissue repairs, and an elite athlete who sleeps badly is destroying the asset faster than training rebuilds it.
And Mbappe represents the third variable, the one you cannot train into existence: top speed. He has been clocked in the region of thirty-six kilometres an hour in match conditions, which is not a training outcome, but architecture.
The Self-Inflicted Wound
And here is what the optimisation industry does not like to say: genetics still decides the ceiling. No diet produces Mbappe's acceleration, no sleep protocol produces Haaland's frame, and no nutritionist produces whatever is in Messi's nervous system that lets him change direction before defenders have processed the first movement.
What the optimisation actually does is different, and more interesting—it does not raise the ceiling, but keeps you at your ceiling for longer and stops you falling below it. And this is where Haaland's diet gets complicated with organ meat, raw honey, filtered water, and very large amounts of milk. Some of it is well founded, as liver genuinely is nutrient dense and a one hundred and ninety-four centimetre athlete genuinely does need intake that would be absurd for anyone else.
And some of it is a story, where the word ancestral is doing enormous work by implying a return to something proven when what it describes is a modern high-performance protocol wearing a costume. So let me say this clearly: none of this is a template, and six thousand calories is a prescription for a specific man with specific output and medical supervision since these are protocols built around individual athletes by paid specialists who monitor the results.
The genuinely transferable lesson is much more boring: Messi removed sugar and processed food, and Ronaldo prioritised sleep. Neither is exotic, and both are free.
The Exception
So who is winning? Messi solved fuel and got a second career phase in his thirties that nobody expected, including a World Cup. Ronaldo solved recovery, and the result is the longest sustained elite career in the modern game by some distance.
And Haaland is running the newest experiment—not optimising a career that exists, but trying to build a body that will not break in the first place in an era where the calendar is the biggest threat to any player, which makes him the most interesting of the four, so ask again in eight years.

The Counter Case
Now the honest objection, and it is serious: much of what circulates about these diets comes from tabloids and interviews given years apart; very little is verified the way a scientific claim would need to be, and several of these people have commercial relationships with the methods they describe.
There is also a strong argument that the whole marginal gains industry is oversold, as clubs spend enormous sums on recovery yet injury rates across the sport have not fallen. In some competitions they have risen because the calendar keeps expanding, and no amount of liver fixes seventy matches a season.
And there is survivorship bias running through all of it, because we are examining four men who succeeded, not the thousands who followed similar protocols and did not.
The Final Verdict
This produces the tension defining the modern game: the commercial side wants more matches because matches are revenue, while the performance side wants fewer because matches are damage. All the liver and all the sleep cycles are an attempt to survive a schedule set by people who do not have to play it.
Back to the six thousand calories. It sounds primal, like a man rejecting modernity, but it is the opposite. It is one of the most modern things in world sport: a precisely engineered intake, monitored continuously, for a body treated as an investment since it was a teenager.
There is nothing ancestral about it; that is just the marketing.
