The Love of Christ for Us – Part 1: From the Birth to the Last Supper

The story of Christ’s passion—the suffering and ultimate sacrifice of Jesus—did not begin with the betrayal in Gethsemane or the journey to Calvary. It began much earlier, with the miraculous birth of a child who came to bring hope to a broken world. To understand the full depth of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, we must first walk through the life that led up to it: a life filled with prophecy, purpose, compassion, and divine mission. Part one of this journey explores the path from His humble birth in Bethlehem to the sacred, solemn Last Supper He shared with His disciples. This is a story of divine love unfolding through every chapter of Christ’s life.

The Love of Christ for Us – Part 1: From the Birth to the Last Supper

The story of Christ’s passion—the suffering and ultimate sacrifice of Jesus—did not begin with the betrayal in Gethsemane or the journey to Calvary. It began much earlier, with the miraculous birth of a child sent to bring hope and redemption to a broken world. To fully grasp the depth of Jesus’ love and sacrifice on the cross, we must first walk through the life that led up to it: a life marked by prophecy, compassion, divine purpose, and unwavering love. Part one of this sacred journey explores His path from a humble birth in Bethlehem to the solemn and intimate Last Supper with His disciples. This is the unfolding of God’s love for humanity—expressed through every moment of Christ’s earthly life.

A Miraculous Birth Foretold

The story begins not with fanfare or royal celebrations, but with divine prophecy and heavenly announcements. Long before the birth of Jesus, prophets like Isaiah foretold the coming of a Messiah who would save the world. “Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel,” meaning “God with us.”

In the quiet village of Nazareth, a young woman named Mary received a divine visitation. The angel Gabriel appeared to her and declared that she would conceive by the Holy Spirit and give birth to the Son of God. Her humble reply, “Let it be to me according to your word,” marked the beginning of a world-changing miracle.

Jesus was born in Bethlehem, not in a palace, but in a stable. Laid in a manger and wrapped in swaddling clothes, He was first adored by shepherds and later visited by wise men guided by a star. Even in infancy, Jesus fulfilled prophecy and drew the attention of both the lowly and the wise. King Herod, threatened by His birth, sought to destroy Him, forcing Mary and Joseph to flee with their child to Egypt—yet another prophecy fulfilled.

A Childhood Marked by Divine Favor

Though the Bible records few details about Jesus’ childhood, what we do see reveals a deep spiritual awareness even in His youth. At twelve years old, He was found in the temple, astonishing scholars with His understanding of Scripture. When His anxious parents found Him, He responded, “Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?”

That moment revealed both His divine calling and His unbreakable bond with God the Father. Jesus returned to Nazareth, living in obedience to His earthly parents, and continued to grow in wisdom, stature, and favor with God and man.

The Baptism and the Wilderness

At around thirty years of age, Jesus stepped into the public eye, beginning His ministry by being baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. Though sinless, He chose baptism as a symbol of humility and to identify with those He came to redeem. As He emerged from the water, the heavens opened, the Holy Spirit descended like a dove, and a voice declared, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

Immediately after, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where He fasted for forty days and was tempted by Satan. Despite hunger and physical weakness, He stood firm, resisting every temptation. His victory in the wilderness foreshadowed the ultimate triumph He would achieve over sin and death.

Ministry of Miracles and Messages

For the next three years, Jesus traveled through Galilee and Judea, preaching the Good News, healing the sick, and bringing hope to the hopeless. He turned water into wine, gave sight to the blind, cleansed lepers, calmed storms, fed multitudes, and raised the dead. Every miracle pointed to His divine identity as the Son of God.

But Jesus didn’t just perform miracles—He taught with divine authority. Through parables and sermons, He revealed the heart of God. He preached love, mercy, forgiveness, and justice—not as ideals, but as commands for everyday life. He challenged the religious elite who clung to rituals without relationship, and uplifted the poor, the broken, and the outcast.

He chose twelve disciples—ordinary men, not scholars or rulers—to walk with Him, learn from Him, and one day carry forward His mission. Through their journey, they witnessed firsthand the depth of His love and the power of His calling.

The Shadow of the Cross Grows Near

As His message spread, so did resistance. The religious authorities—the Pharisees and Sadducees—grew increasingly hostile, fearing His growing influence and questioning His boldness. But Jesus pressed on, knowing full well the cost of His mission.

He began to speak more openly about His death. He told His disciples that He would be betrayed, arrested, suffer greatly, and rise again. Though they struggled to understand, He remained focused, unwavering in His obedience to the Father’s will.

The Triumphal Entry and Final Teachings

When Jesus entered Jerusalem, He rode in on a donkey, fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah: “Behold, your King comes to you... lowly and riding on a donkey.” The crowds shouted “Hosanna!” and laid palm branches in His path. It looked like a coronation—but Jesus knew the crown He would wear was made of thorns.

In the days that followed, He taught in the temple, exposed hypocrisy, and wept over the city that would soon reject Him. He gave His final teachings, including the Olivet Discourse, in which He warned of trials to come and called for faithfulness in the face of adversity. Everything He did was to prepare His followers for what was to come—His death, resurrection, and their role in spreading the Gospel.

The Last Supper: Love and Legacy

On the night of His arrest, Jesus shared the Passover meal with His disciples. It was not just a farewell supper, but a sacred moment filled with eternal meaning. He took bread and wine and gave them new significance: “This is My body, broken for you… This is My blood, shed for the forgiveness of sins.” In that moment, He established the sacrament of Holy Communion—a lasting remembrance of His love and sacrifice.

He then did something extraordinary: He washed His disciples’ feet. The Son of God, kneeling before His followers, demonstrated that true greatness is found in humility and service. Despite knowing Judas would betray Him, Peter would deny Him, and the others would flee, Jesus loved them fully and without hesitation.

From the moment of His miraculous birth to that sacred evening in the upper room, Jesus’ life was a continuous offering of divine love. He walked among the broken, healed the sick, comforted the rejected, and spoke truth to power. Every step was taken in love, every word spoken with purpose, every act infused with grace.
